Recurrent evacuation of mantle mush in ocean islands revealed by clinopyroxene from La Palma

Caracciolo A., Ubide T., Ágreda-López M., Herrera R., Marquez A., González-García D., Huertas M. J., Ancochea E., Chicharro N., Coello-Bravo J. J., Petrelli M.

Nature Communications 17, 9362

Temporal variations in magma plumbing influence eruption priming and the interpretation of unrest signals, yet remain poorly constrained in low-flux ocean island volcanoes. Here, we examine temporal changes in the active volcanic system beneath La Palma,...

Volcaniclastic deposit failure as a source of pyroclastic density currents during the 1944 eruption of Vesuvius

Natale J., Falasconi A., Grillo T. O., Bevilacqua A., Buono G., Favalli M., Fornaciai A., Frontoni A., Giordano G., Intrieri E., Nave R., Pappalardo L., Vona A., Di Traglia F.

Volcanica, 9(2), pp. 497–520

Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) are among the most lethal volcanic phenomena and are mainly generated by column collapse, lateral blasts, or dome failure. An additional but still poorly constrained hazard is represented by PDCs produced by the collapse...

Reappraisal of Holocene Caldera Resurgence at Campi Flegrei (Southern Italy): A Long-Lived Magma-Driven Resurgent Dome System

Natale J., Vitale S.

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 131, e2025JB033576

Caldera systems commonly experience inner resurgence, which shapes patterns of volcanic activity. However, incomplete reconstructions of past ground deformation can lead to incorrect recognition of precursory signals. The Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy)...

Unravelling the gap between the probabilistic volcanic hazard and risk perception: A comparative study of tephra fallout at Etna and Vesuvius volcanoes

Mele D., Lanciano T., Caporale D., Bellucci Sessa E., Massaro S., Nave R., Patimo R., Piazza R., Puglisi G., Rainò S., Rinaldi A., Scollo S., Sulpizio R.

International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction 143 (2026) 106325

Volcanic risk management frequently encounters a significant gap between Probabilistic Volcanic Hazard Assessment and subjective risk perception. This study addresses this issue by comparing communities exposed to tephra fallout from two contrasting volcanoes...

Mafic-ultramafic igneous rocks as a source of reactive phosphorus for the origin of life

Baidya A.S., Walton C.R., Kalita J., Szilas K., Viccaro M., Savage P.S., Allison S., Nisbet E.G., Schönbächler M., Mikhail S., Stüeken E.E.

Nature Communications, 17, 8994.

Phosphite and pyrophosphate - reduced and polymerized forms of phosphorus - may have played a central role in prebiotic chemistry owing to their higher reactivity and solubility, yet their geological sources remain uncertain. Here we show that mafic–ultramafic...
