TEPHRA (Training in Eruptive Processes, Hazards and Risk Assessment)
Naples (Italy) - October 22-27, 2026
The Italian Association of Volcanology (AIV), with INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) and supported by IAVCEI, is pleased to announce the 2026 edition of the International School of Volcanology.
LOCATION AND DATES
The school will be held in Naples, Italy, at the headquarters of INGV – Osservatorio Vesuviano.
Activities will take place from October 22 to 27, 2026. Official activities will conclude on the evening of October 26. The dates have been selected to facilitate a potential connection with the upcoming "Cities on Volcanoes" event.
SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The course aims to present the latest developments in volcanology applied to active volcanoes. The program will cover multiple aspects: from tephra studies to laboratory activities, from data acquisition and processing to the development of numerical models and reference eruption scenarios.
Volcanological studies and models will be integrated to define eruptive dynamics, quantify the impact of volcanic phenomena on the surrounding environment, and compile volcanic hazard maps, which are essential tools for risk zoning by Civil Protection authorities. The school's theme is particularly relevant given the current evolution of Neapolitan volcanoes, with a special focus on the Campi Flegrei caldera.
COURSE ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE
The program will span five days and will combine short lectures with extensive fieldwork. The course has a strong practical orientation, favoring a hands-on approach over a theoretical instruction.
Participants will conduct direct observations of outcrops and perform laboratory experiments (both analytical and modeling) designed to foster learning through direct experience.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The school is specifically designed for and aimed at PhD students, post-docs, and Early Career Researchers (ECRs).
Applications from MSc students may also be considered if positions remain available.
Due to logistical constraints, the maximum number of participants is approximately 20.
PARTICIPATION FEE
The registration fee is € 250 and includes:
- 5 nights of accommodation
- meals during the school
- local transportation during school activities
Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses to and from Naples.

Applications must be submitted in English.
Applicants must provide:
- a brief CV, including information on previous coursework, field experience, and scientific background
- a statement of interest, giving their background relevant to the school and arguing why attendance of the school will be to their benefit
- a statement of health and fitness, confirming their suitability for field activities under hot, sunny, and uneven terrain conditions.
SELECTION CRITERIA
If the numer of applications exceeds the available places,participants will be selected by the organizing committee based on their CV, statement of interest, and scientific background.
Preference will be given to candidates:
- working in volcanology or related disciplines
- involved in volcanic hazard assessment, risk analysis and/or disaster management.
- from geographically underrepresented regions and developing countries
Selected participants will receive further information regarding accommodation, logistics, and potential IAVCEI Early Career Researcher travel grants.
Applicants should have:
- basic knowledge of geology, volcanology, geochemistry, petrology, and geophysics and their application to constrain volcano eruption dynamics;
- sufficient English proficiency to actively participate in discussions and activities

GENERAL INFORMATION
Language
The official language of the school is English.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be provided in double or triple rooms at Hotel Nuvò, located a few hundred meters from INGV - Osservatorio Vesuviano.

Check-in
Registration and welcome activities will begin on Thursday 22 October at 7:00 am. Additional logistic information will be provided to selected participants.
Clothing and Field Equipment
Participants are expected to bring standard geological field equipment and appropriate clothing suitable for volcanic environments.
